Living in Brixton for a few decades is like a proper love affair – you’re almost certain you have seen it all, from the evolving shops to the ever-present aroma of delicious food and weed (London Aroma)!
There’s a place that holds a special place in my heart: The Brixton Recreation Centre, or Rec as the locals would say.

It’s not every day you get to swim laps in a pool once graced by the legendary Nelson Mandela in 1996, is it? Talk about a splash of history! This magnificent beast of a building, snuggled right next to Brixton Train Station, certainly makes a statement with its colossal presence overlooking those elevated rail tracks. It’s like the Colosseum of cardio, but with better lighting.
Huge kudos to Kate Mackintosh, the widow of lead architect George Finch, and the Brixton Rec Users Group for getting this architectural marvel Grade II listed in November 2016. It’s a testament to its brilliant design, fitting perfectly into the Brixton landscape without being a concrete eyesore. You’ve got to admire a building that can be massive, sculptural, and yet totally unobtrusive – a bit like a well-behaved, very large elephant!
Inside, the six floors of the Rec are a hive of activity. There’s nothing quite like doing a few lengths in the pool, with the sun streaming through those enormous windows and a train rumbling past – it’s like a mini-movie unfolding while you get your exercise in! This place has always served as a vital anchor for my well-being, a consistent space for exercise that significantly boosts my mental health.
And speaking of feeling good, it’s great that Lambeth Council stepped in a few years ago and took the reins from the previous operator (who, let’s face it, had a rather ironic name!). It sounds like the Rec has truly found its groove again, with an even stronger sense of community. It’s clear the Rec isn’t just a building; it’s the beating heart of Brixton, pumping life and good vibes into everyone who steps through its doors. What’s your favourite part about using the Rec?
